During the height of the hippie revolution in the 70’s, when throngs of North American teenagers flooded India and Nepal in search of enlightenment, Garab G. Lama’s father was running a restaurant in Kathmandu called The Golden Dragon. He soon moved into the antiques business, and after 12 years of schooling in India, Garab joined him in the family business. In 1997, Garab met a Canadian working on the IMAX Everest film who invited him to visit Canada. “I first came to Canada in the winter of 1997 for about 5 days,” recalls Garab. “Then I came back a second time, and I didn’t like it. Then a third time and a fourth and a fifth. I still didn’t like it, but somehow I knew that this was the country where I should spend the rest of my life.”
Garab finally immigrated to Canada in 2008 and took over ownership of the Tibet Kitchen in 2012. “Some countries are like fake gold, the more you polish them the worse they look. But Canada is real gold: the longer I am here, the harder I work, the shinier it becomes,” he says.
