“A lot of our students have never seen a sewing machine up close,” says Laurie Franks, owner of La Movida Design Studios. “We go right from the beginning, teaching how to sew, how to make appropriate choices for fabrics, how to read a pattern and how to make something fit or make the changes to it.” Laurie and her assistant Samantha Weaver offer students at La Movida Design Studios the opportunity to develop and refine their sewing skills in a fun, positive environment, challenging them to learn, practice and be creative. “There is so much pride and fulfillment in making something rather than buying something,” Laurie explains. “Everyone is just so thrilled with how fast their skills develop.” The classes at La Movida Design Studios are project-based so that students learn how to sew at their own level while making something they would actually wear, use and be proud of. La Movida Design Studios hopes to inspire future generations of fashion designers and home sewers of all ages.
