"We're a social enterprise that showcases arts and crafts on the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver," says Katie Piasta, manager of The Window Community Arts Shop. "We also offer job training for women living in the Portland Hotel Society accommodation, as well as mentorship and sewing classes."
The shop itself offers a place for artists in the area to sell their work on consignment. "The artist receives 55% of the proceeds," says Katie, "and we keep 35% to cover wages and other operating costs."
As a social enterprise The Window Community Art Shop is a non-profit and run by Portland Hotel Society Community Services, an advocacy and housing group aiding residents of the area.
