As a Nova Scotianer, and someone who went to chef school, I have to say that Duffy's makes the best (haddock) fish and chips in the area if you don't feel like traveling to Sauble Beach. I know fish and chips. Grew up on the stuff. My uncles were all fishermen and their sons still are. Duffy's is REALL good. The wine spritzer was also excellent. The service was perfect.
After moving here from just outside of Toronto I was looking for a place I could go to that had good service and consistantly good food. Duffy's has both. A nice selection of Scotch keeps me going back and being a vegetarian, the veggie burger and quesadillas are the best I've had in ages. All my friends say the fish is the best in Bruce County and constantly go back. The owners are great and I always look foward to going back!
I have been going to Duffy's for over ten years. First time in was when Ernie Duff and his Wife Brenda ran it. It's great to see a young couple like Jay and Karen (although Jay can't sing anything like Ernie could), who own it now, making some subtle yet nice changes to the place. A TV has been added, a piano and the menu has been freshened up. There is a terrific selection of domestic and imported draught on tap. An excellent array of Scotch available. The food is for the most part Pub Fare which I usually go for and I'm never dissapointed. Their menu has full dinner items as well. I noticed that some people have critised the service, we live in a small, seasonal town that has to deal with line ups one month and silence the next. I think that maybe we need to get past the instant gratification that Toronto can afford to offer and the staff deserve to be cut a little slack. I have seen lots of happy people leave this restaurant over the years and I'm sure I'll see a lot more. Keep up the good work!
I came in with 7 other people at their busiest time. I waited probably 10 mins for the waitress to clean off a huge table at the front for us. Our main course was on our table 20min after we ordered despite the place being packed & it was great. I think every waitress in the restaurant helped us out, they were all very friendly. For sure heading back next time we're in town.
My husband and I went to Southampton and decided to try the famous Fish and Chips at Duffy's. Unfortunately we could not..... I am still wondering why the owner and the waitresses completely ignored us.... The restaurant was not really that busy, there were clearly several tables available and we were the only 2 people standing at the door of the restaurant, the rest of the people were seated..... They definitely knew we were there.... The owner, who was on the phone when we arrived, gave us a couple of looks and kept talking on the phone. the waitresses didn't even look at us.... My husband and i decided to sit on one of the tables available and wait to be served. At this moment the waitress that was helping people around us decided to start cleaning the empty tables beside us. she clearly saw when we sat down and she knew we were waiting for someone to help us but she decided to ignore us. After 20 minutes we stood up and left the restaurant..... We didn't get a greeting, we didn't get a word of welcoming , we didn't get to try the food...... WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?????
In complete agreement with previous posts. Food was terrible and overpriced and the service was slow and rude. The fact that the owner of the restaurant has to create an account and post a 5/5 rating of their own place in order to artificially boost the average rating, should be a warning in and of itself.
When you enter Duffys, you are greeted by a "please wait to be seated" sign. This would be OK, if one of the employees actually acknowledged your existence within 20 minutes of standing at the door, even when there were 5-6 empty tables. Dirty plates and cutlery remain on the tables for a very long time and our table was not even wiped down by the curt and rude waitress that seated us. The fish was awful and overpriced. Service rude and slow, if you are lucky enough to even get noticed by the staff, who do everything in their power to avoid serving you. Save yourself $50 and buy a frozen Captain Highliner entree...will probably taste as good if not better than what "Duffys" is serving....
The halibut was dry, the batter was okay, the fish had obviously been in the freezer for some time and then left to un-thaw then battered. The coleslaw was good, the fries were overcooked way too dark. The other dinner was chicken wings, they were good, but very expensive, despite the waitress mentioning they were on special. The drink order was 2 pepsi and one bottle of beer. The pepsi came in plastic child size glasses, with very little pepsi but lots of ice. The waitress asked if anyone wanted a refill, little did we realize the refill would once again cost us. We were charged full price of another drink. I don't mind paying for a refill but not at full price, especially given the glass contained more ice than pepsi. I have reservations as to whether I would revisit the place. The total cost was $51.55 for the dinner, next time I will go to the elsewhere.
We entered ight at their busiest time. The owner came up a got us seated right away. Food was great and service was very nice. It had a nice "feel" to it.
The fish was rubbery and tasteless. The fries had an onion taste to them. It appeared as if the fish had been in a freezer for several months. My husband ate one piece thinking it was going to get better and since it tasted rubbery He left the other piece of fish. When the waitress came back to the table to ask how everything was, we told her the fish was rubbery and tasteless. She called over a male (owner/manager) who did not identify himself. He asked if we wanted something else and we said that we were not interested in trying anything else. After some time the waitress took our plates away with the food left on it after the initial consultation. She returned with the bill, $24.17, including both dinners and the 2 drinks. I asked the waitress if she was really going to charge us for everything and she said the man had given her the bill. We put $30.00 on the tray, she returned with the change of $5.83 and 2 candies. We took the change, left the candy on the table and left the restaurant. The owner obviously needed the money, was not interested in customer service or in our business ever again.
Food and service were excellent!! Busy busy summer evening, but still recieved GREAT service. Restaurant kitchen only open til 8:00, but was stated as such on outside sign. Waitresses were fabulous! Lots of smiles, knowledgeable and accommadating. Food was great ... much more than just fish and chips. Great bar menu - nice selection of beers. We will return - and tell others!
