Jack Lamon, a worker-owner at Come As You Are, has been asked a lot of questions about sex. “Who can you talk to?” jokes Jack. “Well, you can talk to the person that works at the sex shop. Who are they to judge you? They work at a sex shop!”
While Jack is saying this with a smirk, there’s a serious point to be taken. “Our society is so sex-negative,” he says. A core value at Come As You Are is to normalize customers’ diverse experiences and desires when it comes to the bedroom (or anywhere else, for that matter). “When customers ask a question, it’s always prefaced with ‘oh, this is such a weird question.’ The thing is, they’re never weird questions. Ever. Everything stops being weird after the tenth time someone’s asked it.”
While Come As You Are sells the gamut of sex toys, books and DVDs you might expect at a sex shop, Jack explains it offers more than just the goods. “We change people’s lives daily, just by working an eight-hour shift. It’s sad to say, but in the world of sex retail and sex education, you can do very little and people will be very grateful because no one else in their lives is safe to talk to.” The shop is also fully accessible, with an automatic door and no steps. The washroom is also wheelchair accessible.
