I had only been here once before the last time I tried to go here. The first time was ok, nothing particularly good or bad about the place. The second time, it was a homecoming weekend for Laurier myself and a friend showed up to Ethel’s wearing Laurier clothing. The bouncer asked us for id and we provided it. As he was checking out id he asked in a very friendly manner if we had been celebrating homecoming, we said that we had and thought everything was ok. He told us we couldn't come in because they ‘ weren't interested in the rowdiness that homecoming brings.’ There were two of us, myself and a date, neither of us had been drinking and we were not allowed to come in. After taking a cab there my date and I had to walk several blocks (it was very cold and rainy out at end of September and she was wearing heels) to another place that we were good enough for. I’m glad I only went there once prior to this incident and they will only have to tell me I cannot come in once as I have no intention of returning.
I'd been here once before with my buddies and had an extremely attentive, friendly server, so I did not think twice before coming back. As it turned out, this was a big mistake.
I went to Ethel's Lounge with my girlfriend recently, and had horrendous service by one extremely rude waitress.
Firstly she was dressed in an inappropriately low-cut top and short shorts. Then when my food arrived I discovered long, brown hair in it- same colour as the waitresses. I and asked her about it, she became extremely defensive and said it must be my girlfriends (she's blond). The only other 2 people working were men with short hair, and I have short hair as well.
My girlfriend stated the hair is obviously is not hers as she's blond, and I nicely asked her for another dish, and the waitress said I would have to pay a 2nd time. I had not even touched my first dish.
So I asked for the cheque and left. Left a 5% tip, which was more than she was worth.
I've had a good time here once before, but this last time left me with an extremely foul taste.
Stay away.
Taco Tuesday's are a must. Ethel's is always packed on Tuesdays for their 2 dollar taco deal.
However, there are other excellent options on the menu. Try their antijito's, which are reasonably priced compared to other places and come in a decent portion size. They make everything in-house at this place and you can tell with the quality of food. Their home made pico de gallo is delicious!
Ethel's has an excellent selection of beer and very genuine service. The servers are good at their job- which is keeping your beer pitchers full- but they don't kiss your butt for tips. I like the honest attitude they have.
The atmosphere, food and drinks are great, but the staff does not always understand that customer service means being at least civil with clients. Some staff are awesome, but other staff are rude. My latest experience with one of their bartenders was so negative that our group of 10 people left and vowed never to return. Management needs to put more thought into who they hire behind the bar.
