Taking place at Prince’s Island Park from July 21 to 24, 2016, Calgary Folk Music Festival presents a surprisingly diverse array of musical styles. Also varied, festivalgoer fashions naturally lean to cool and casual Bohemian chic. Visit the following shops to find unique, summery clothing and funky accessories fit for folk aficionados, world-music devotees and indie enthusiasts. [Image credit: iStock.com/svetikd]

Birkenstock Sandals

From beds to footwear, this shop knows comfort. And comfy footwear is a festival essential. Within the Futons for Less building, the Birkenstock Store in Kensington has plenty of styles in stock. Choose from a variety of colours as well as open- and closed-toe sandal styles. Great cushioning and even better support makes Birkenstocks a folkie favourite.

Mountain Equipment Co-Op

2
830-10th Avenue SW, Calgary AB T2R 0A9

Folk Fest is an outdoor event, and MEC is a one-stop shop for outdoor gear for the whole family. Given Calgary’s unpredictable weather, it’s best to be prepared for variable conditions with clothing layers that may include pants, short- and long-sleeve shirts, sweaters and rain gear. While its fashion focus is clothing fit for wilderness pursuits, MEC also offers casual city wear including skirts, dresses, sunhats and comfortable footwear.

27 Boutique Inc

This sweet 17th Avenue Southwest shop carries women’s fashions from across the globe. Find Canadian-made clothing as well as designer-label selections from New York, LA, Australia and Denmark. Trendy new arrivals include Melie Bianco handbags, Pike & Bear jewellery, Chinese Laundry shoes, DEX and Gentle Fawn dresses and more. One of our favourite Folk Fest-friendly fashions here are clothes by Instagram fashion phenom Coffee in the Shower, including cheeky graphic tanks, tees and hats. Their “Mimosas for President” tank is my favourite.

A Special Place

4008 16 St SW, Calgary AB T2T 4H4

Visit A Special Place in Altadore for casually elegant women’s clothing. Summer solstice-inspired skirts and dresses are among the unique American- and Canadian-designed clothing you’ll find. Black and white paired with bold colours is this shop’s favourite trend this season. Big on accessories, A Special Place stocks statement necklaces, unique hand bags, and blinged-out bracelets, belts and earrings. Notably, the shop features regular summer sales events.

Chapel Hats

Calgary’s finest hat shop for men, women and children is located in Chinook Centre. This chapeau centre even features a festival-friendly hat section heaped with hats just a bit too risky to wear to the grocer. Think floppy hats with fringes and bangles and others featuring furry animal ears. The shop stocks almost every hat style imaginable including floppy sun hats, fedoras, berets and beanies.

For those of us who collect great reads, buying used books is a budget-friendly way to build a home library. Alternatively, most second-hand bookshops accept trade-ins for cash or credit. This list includes specialty used shops as well as shops offering textbook buybacks and second-hand stores that carry books. Image credit: iStock.com/Maxiphoto.
