“Hospitality runs in our blood,” Pete Mahony, co-owner of Mahony and Sons says about his family. The Mahony lineage is Irish, but that ended when great grandpa Barney was exiled to Australia during the great potato famine. His crime? Stealing a loaf of bread. The family lived in Oz for a few generations, until Pete’s parents moved to Vancouver. His dad owned and operated several pubs in the areas surrounding Vancouver, including one in North Delta, where his sons went to work once they were old enough. Fast forward a few years – and five of the sons decided to go into business together. They wanted to have an Irish pub, to connect with their ancestry, “Irish pubs are welcoming places. It’s all about the craic (fun, good times),” Pete says. Mahony and Sons was born.
Their first pub, at UBC, opened in June 2006, the Burrard Landing location in 2011, and then Stamps Landing in August 2014. The co-owning brothers are Pete, Chris, Mike, Paddy and Gerrard Mahony. The sprawling and beautiful Stamps Landing location has that welcoming feel so key to the Mahony family. “Growing up with eight siblings who always had friends over meant a full, fun household," Pete says. "That’s the feeling we want here.”
