If you wanna eat the best smoked meat in town, go to Schwartz's! It is a small place, always packed, the design haven't change for more than 50 years, but you wouldn't want it to change either... Really good local place! Try it!
The smoked meat sandwiches are pretty amazing. Basically, they take smoked meat with mustard and surround it with a small layer of three sandwich halves. The smoked meat is tender and tasty. The mustard is different, but the flavor is pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot and returned a few times. The service was good. We had very many people and a large order, and they accommodated us. However, there was a huge line-up outside, and it took forever for us to order (take-out). Good luck if you're trying to find a seat in there. The atmosphere was simple. Nothing special. The place is too small considering its popularity. It should expand, but that risks a decline in quality.
Best smoked meat EVER!!! I always have the medium meat as I find the lean too dry. I agree that this is definitely worth a drive to Montreal -- I'm going this weekend :)
Schwartz's has really great smoked meat. You don't want to go with the lean stuff.. indulge yourself, after all this is a taste of Montreal. Price is great. However, lineups are common especially at lunch time which means you could wait a while to get in, and the place is so small that sitting can sometimes be awkward for a larger-than-average person. You'll certainly have to sit next to someone you don't know, but that's part of the experience. It gets hot and humid in there.. it's not the type of place you want to spend an hour chatting after supper.. you want to eat and get out. Bottom line: when you get a smoked meat craving, Schwartz's is your number one spot, but you don't go there for the decor/experience unless it's nostalgic.
We went to dinner with friends who recommended the place as the best in its category. Deception. The dills were excellent but the lean smoked meat was dry and the taste quite ordinary. I have eaten better smoked meat sandwiches elsewhere. Moreover, the table was not as clean as it should have been, neither was the mustard container.
