Decent service, i like how you can pretty much ask any ot the wait staff for stuff and they bring it. Food was pretty good tonight as well. Try # 91.... and of course the hand rolls are pretty good too.
I myself is a sushi lover and love to frequent Japanese cuisines. I personally worked at a Japanese cuisine in my hometown (Richmond Hill, Ontario) for quite some time. I decided to have AYCE with my friends yesterday and on the first order (remembering from the top of my head) we ordered - miso soup - seaweed salad - sashimi (50 salmon, 20 white tuna, 20 crab meat) - sushi (red tuna, sakura lover, spicy salmon) - house rolls (red dragon, dynamite) - shrimp tempura - salmon steak I first had the miso soup. I noticed that it was luke warm, not hot. I did not finish my soup as it was disgusting. I turned to my seaweed salad and it came to my attention that it was not a seaweed salad, but a huge bowl of garden salad with a few specks of seaweed drowned in mayo sauce. At this time the sashimi came. I grabbed my first piece (salmon) and to my surprise that it was stuck to another piece. I had to get my friend to pull off the other piece. I let that slide as I understand that this place is very busy and the cutter may be rushed. I placed the sashimi in my mouth, and i noticed that it was ice cold. I assume that it was just taken out of the fridge and not from the sushi cabinet. I also noticed that the one who was preparing the fish earlier did not remove obvious tendons. After i finished around 20 pieces (which most of them were not cut properly and was stuck with another piece) i noticed there was a puddle of water in the middle of the half-empty dish. I instantly know that the salmon was not wrapped in paper towel (which is a must do after preparing to prevent the fish from freezing in the fridge - and that may explain why it is ice cold). Next i turned to the sushi. After my disappointing fish-preparation and cutting skills with the sashimi i turned to creativeness and preparation with the sushi. We stared at it because we were sure we didnt order it. I asked a nearby server and he explained to me that it is spicy salmon and sakura lover sushi. It came to my surprise not only they were prepared wrong, but the rice/fish ratio was horrible. - The spicy salmon here is just a just a piece of rice with seaweed wrapper round, topped with a piece of salmon and spicy mayo. It missed 2 ingredients (honey and tabiko) and is supposed to be mixed with spicy mayo and chopped (emphasize - CHOPPED) salmon. - The sakura lover here is just a piece of rice with mayo and a piece of salmon on top. To have a visual picture imagine a piece of salmon sushi, with mayo spread over. Sakura lover is supposed to be salmon wrapped around the rice, topped with mayo and tabiko. I was disgusted with the presentation but went on and picked up the sakura lover. To my surprise the rice fell apart and the piece of salmon dropped on the table. First the salmon sashimi was not cut properly, tendons not removed, and now they cant even squish a rice ball together? I had a lot of questions as to whether the people here had any formal training or any training at all. Right after i finished my sakura lover another plate of sushi arrived. The fish was bright pink. The server explained that it was the red tuna sushi. Last time i remembered red tuna was RED, not bright pink. It looks exactly like the ginger they serve with the wasabi in the beginning (btw, brown ginger is better, but i guess if you resort to add ridiculous amount of rice to all makis and sushis, why not spend less and buy the cheaper, fake ginger?) Moving on to the appetizer, i picked up a piece of shrimp tempura. I noticed that it was not golden, but grey-ish. I think it was time for them to change the oil in the fryer. I dipped it in the sweet soya sauce and noticed that they gave us so little sauce that only the tip was dipped. I tried to bend the shrimp in the sauce bowl (I didn't want to double dip) and the shrimp broke. I was surprised because i thought shrimp was supposed to be flexible when bent. I looked in the sauce, and noticed it was all batter. Now i think to myself if they know how to fry. Fast forwarding to end when we were about to leave, we had around 5 pieces of salmon sashimi left (which was in a puddle of water) and a couple of maki rolls (did i mention they the rice/stuffing proportion was unbelievable? It feels like you're just eating rice). We got up and headed for the counter to pay, as we were full. I stood up, and noticed that a number of servers were collecting various soy sauce bottles and refilling it. I was disgusted as they only unscrewed the bottle, filled it, and used a wet cloth to wipe the mouth of the bottle. Might i add that this is VERY unsanitary. Ye's if you are reading this you are supposed to unscrew the caps, put in a bowl of warm water and dry it off with PAPER TOWEL, and you dry off the mouth with PAPER TOWEL. disgusting. When it was our turn to pay at the counter, the girl at the counter explained that she added $8 to our bill for leftover food. She handed me a takeout box with the food we didn't eat. They packed our food secretly when we were lining up. She kept apologizing, and the whole line was staring at her, I felt bad for her because it was not her fault (there was a man standing beside her, and I believe he was the manager/boss) and I'm not going to add that I caught one of the people at the cutting board picking his nose... wait I did now.
I have recently spent more time here than in the Kitchener location. The food is pretty good, especially given the price. The sashimi tends to be very good, though some items arrive only partially-thawed. The sushi, though sloppily prepared, is quite good. The food tends to be very good overall. The green onion beef rolls are not so consistent. Service is what you might expect. Slow, sloppy and unenthusiastic. They always get my order wrong (numbers-wise) For what I paid, I don't care. This is a very busy location. Much busier than the Kitchener location. However, it is cleaner, more comfortable and better overall.
I have frequented this restaurant with many different groups of friends in the past two years or so. One thing that has not improved then has been their service. I believe that the problem really lies in the fact that there is genuinely no care given to the diners. I understand that the waitresses are responsible for many tasks but some of them lack the essential foresight of knowing when to refill drinks. It is always better to offer than to ask! The food is always good and always guaranteed to fill me up. I also agree that this restaurant's service strategies are hurting its business at some degree (ie. including the 10% surcharge, restricting the buffet time to 1.5 hours). I would love to see this restaurant improve its attitude towards customers and hopefully show a bit more appreciation in the future.
Am I the only one who has had good service? Food was served rather promptly and the questions that I had were answered. A couple of the wait-staff stood out, they were super friendly and actually spoke english which helped. As for the food, let's see here.. To start, I had the wonton soup, served in a small cup which was great, not too large, perfect starter. Next on the list was the Queen Roll - it's new on their menu and I must say, I was impressed. I can't recall exactly what was all in it but it was huge and topped with salmon and tuna I believe. Definitely recommend it! I had also ordered a bunch of nigiri: surf clam, BBQ eel, tofu - all favourites, though I must say they're starting to add WAY too much rice. These little bite-fuls aren't supposed to be filling. The menu disappointed me. There was a lot more selection the last time I was there that I wanted to try, but I couldn't this time around as they had removed these items. As another new addition to the menu were the Friday & Saturday Specials. Whether you decided to select these specials or not you were still charged for the special, so I figured, I might as well try them.. Monday - Thursday & Sunday customers pay $19.99 but if you decide to dine on Friday or Saturday you'll be charged $20.99. The specials include: • shrimp skewer • red tuna sashimi • squid sashimi Here's the catch though, during the buffet you can only order TWO of each per person. I wasn't a fan of the red tuna or the squid. The squid was impossible to chew but otherwise wasn't distasteful. As for the shrimp skewer, each skewer only had 2 small pieces of shrimp on them, they were loaded in some sort of sauce and sesame seeds. They were good, no real complaints, nothing too "special" about them though. Overlooking the menu, I wanted at least one more roll so I tried the Red Dragon Roll. At this point, I was pushing it, I was full but I really wanted it and the waitress said that if I can eat at least half of it I wouldn't be charged extra, *phew*, lol. It was yummy, but not as good as the Gold Dragon Roll IMO (Red Roll has Salmon Roe on top whereas the Gold has Salmon on top). And of course no meal is complete without ice cream. I had ordered the green tea which is a favourite of mine, soooo yummy. Aside from the menu lacking items, I couldn't help but notice that customers are FORCED to pay an extra 10% service charge. Not to mention the increase in price on Friday & Saturday. Not only that but they've reduced the buffet time from 2 hours to 1.5 hours. I like to be able to go and enjoy my food, not shovel it in. This kills. I'm a fan of Ye's for their food but their business "strategies" are poor.
